What to visit, where and when to visit Faial Island
When someone talks about visiting the Azores islands, few people prefer the island of Faial.
It really isn't an island with many options of natural beauty to visit, but the ones that it does have are really interesting and of great beauty.
To get to the island of Faial you have very good options, you have a direct flight from Lisbon, you have the option with a stopover Lisbon/Pico and a ferry to Faial and you also have the option with a stopover, Lisbon/Terceira or Ponta Delgada / Faial the most convenient option convenient is Lisbon/Faial by direct flight.
For those, like me, who decided to visit the 3 islands of the central group, I opted for the Lisbon/Faial flight, renting a car as soon as I arrived at Faial airport and set out to discover the beauties of these islands.
The island of Faial has a lot to offer, it has good cuisine, a good atmosphere both day and night and we cannot forget that it has one of the most famous bars in the world, the Peter Sports Café, a meeting place for all the sailors that come to this island. Island.
It also has one of the most important passages in the history of Portugal and in particular the Azores islands.
Below you will find all the information on the most important points of visit on the island.

The trip
City of Horta
Lat: 38.530551 - Lon: -28.626848

It is in the City of Horta that the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores is located, which makes us understand its importance in the lives of the Azorean people. It is inside the Commercial Port that the famous Marina da Horta is located, the first recreational port to be inaugurated in the Azores and an obligatory stop for thousands of yachts and sailboats crossing the North Atlantic.
The city is full of historical, religious and cultural sites with several museums. It was in the city of Horta that Manuel de Arriaga, 1st President of the Portuguese Republic, was born.
There is certainly no shortage of reasons to visit this city, as well as the entire island of Faial.

Porto Pim Bay or better known as Porto Pim beach, is the most frequented beach on the island of Faial, but Porto Pim is more than a beach, Porto Pim is connected to the city of Horta and has a beautiful historic center, the fort, the Porto Pim Whale factory, one of the most relevant testimonies of the industrial past of the island of Faial and which is today an interpretive center of the ancient Azorean whaling activity. It was here in Porto Pim that in 1460 the first settlers of the island settled. From the top of Monte das Moças is where you can best see the rounded bay and Monte Queimado that separates it from another smaller bay.
Castelo Branco hill

Morro de Castelo Branco is associated with the central volcano of Caldeira do Faial and forms a peninsula, joined to the island by an isthmus. The dome displays vertical rocky cliffs, affected by marine erosion, and the trachytic rock is very altered, hence the typical whitish coloration and the name of Castelo Branco.
Capelinhos Volcano
Lat: 38.596715 - Lon: -28.823254
N: 38° 35' 48.174 " W: 28° 49' 23.7144"
N: 38° 35' 48.174 " W: 28° 49' 23.7144"
The Capelinhos Volcano happened on September 27, 1957, at 6:45 am, a volcanic eruption started next to the Capelinhos islets and ended up increasing the land area of the island of Faial. Despite the violence of the eruptions and the duration of these eruptions, they did not cause deaths, covering the nearby village with ash.
Today when visiting the volcano you will be able to visit the lighthouse that survived the eruptions and next to the lighthouse there is the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Center which is worth visiting.

N: 38° 36' 29.8512 " W: 28° 44' 58.8696"
The Ribeiro das Cabras viewpoint offers an extraordinary view over an important part of the island of Faial, both the slope and interior of the island as well as part of the coastline, where Fajã da Praia do Norte stands out.
Aldina Restaurant
Lat: 38.635724 - Lon: -28.713458

N: 38° 38' 8.6063999999997 " W: 28° 42' 48.4488"
I mention the Aldina Restaurant, because it was undoubtedly a pleasant surprise, Isa had seen some information about places to eat on the island and one of those places was this restaurant.
The best mussels I've ever eaten, but all the dishes served are to die for, the service provided by the staff, 10 stars, the amount served in each serving is enough for 2 people, the price is fair.
In the days we stayed on the island, we went there twice. Very good.

Caldeira do Faial

Located in the interior (center) of the island, the Caldeira do Faial, is about 2 km in diameter. Inside, it houses two-thirds of the endemic vascular flora of the Azores, in perfect condition, as well as endemic fauna of Faial and the Archipelago. Next to the south edge is the highest point of the island, Cabeço Gordo, with 1043 meters. In the past, a permanent lagoon existed inside the caldera, resulting from the accumulation of rainwater, which infiltrated following the seismic crisis of May 1958 associated with the eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano, giving rise to a small phreatic explosion inside the caldera. boiler. To visit the Caldeira, you need to observe the weather conditions visually, so you should only decide to go up when there is clear sky over the caldera, it is not worth going up without visibility as it will be frustrating. I only managed to see the boiler on the 3rd attempt
Viewpoint of Cabeço das Pedras Negras
Lat: 38.591799 - Lon: -28.625431
N: 38° 35' 30.4764 " W: 28° 37' 31.5516"
N: 38° 35' 30.4764 " W: 28° 37' 31.5516"
Leaving the main road, start going up the road that will take you to the Miradouro. It's a few km uphill but the views are worth it.
Almoxarife beach
Lat: 38.556287 - Lon: -28.610109
N: 38° 33' 22.6332 " W: 28° 36' 36.3924"
N: 38° 33' 22.6332 " W: 28° 36' 36.3924"
Almoxarife beach is located about five kilometers from the city of Horta, with a breathtaking view of Pico Island. Praia do Almoxarife is frequented by families and people of all ages, as it has a large sandy beach with dark sand and good support infrastructure. The beach is also frequented for water sports, being considered by many as the best beach on Faial Island.
Viewpoint of Our Lady of Conception, Faial
Lat: 38.547789 - Lon: -28.616154
N: 38° 32' 52.0404 " W: 28° 36' 58.1544"
N: 38° 32' 52.0404 " W: 28° 36' 58.1544"
From the viewpoint of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, you can see the historic center of the city and Horta bay on one side, Praia do Almoxarife on the other, and Pico Island with its mountain. On cloudless days you can still see the islands of São Jorge and Graciosa. Leaving the city of Horta, take the road towards the East and in a few Km you will be at this viewpoint.
Marina of Horta
Lat: 38.534082 - Lon: -28.625931
N: 38° 32' 2.6951999999999 " W: 28° 37' 33.3516"
N: 38° 32' 2.6951999999999 " W: 28° 37' 33.3516"
Another icon of the city of Horta is its marina, it has nothing more than any marina around the world except its paintings and with that it is the fourth most visited marina in the world and this is due to its location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean serving as a shelter for all those who decide to cross the ocean on that parallel. Marina da Horta was the first recreational port to be opened in the Azores archipelago, having been inaugurated in 1986. Upon entering the port, your attention is drawn to the immense paintings on the walls and floor that are a true open-air museum, full of of memories of so many who passed through there. It is the way that those who arrive there leave their mark.
Peter cafe sports
Lat: 38.529569 - Lon: -28.626716
N: 38° 31' 46.4484 " W: 28° 37' 36.1776"

Peter café sports is without a doubt the icon of the city of Horta, surely no tourist or sailor who visits the island of Faial and the city of Horta does not stop at Peters bar.
What is now the bar actually started out as a shop that sold embroidery, lace, hats and straw baskets and other handcrafted items. It was Henrique Azevedo who initiated some characteristics that still typify "Peter" today: the choice of furniture (furniture of the same type is still used today), the eagle as a symbol and the ´´gin and tonic´´ as the reference drink.
Today Peters bar, in addition to being the meeting point and where you can taste the delicious Gin, you can also enjoy an excellent meal, with fast and efficient service and not as expensive as it may seem due to its fame.
