Although the name is due to Simón Bolívar, his last name is Basque, and Bolivar is a town from Bizkaia. Bolibar (Bolívar written in Spanish) means “valley of the mill”. Boli = Bolu (it is a mill) Ibar (valley or plain). (Erlantz Ganboa).

The center of the province of Buenos Aires was inhabited by aborigines. In 1850 the "Fortín San Carlos" was installed, the first of a line of advance over the natives.

The Fortín San Carlos next to the Laguna Pichi Carhué raised its mangrullo in the immensity of the wild pampas, anticipating founding dreams.

One hot and heavy day, March 8, 1872, the battle of San Carlos was fought, one of the most important and fiercest, not only of the Conquest of the Desert, but of Argentine history. Calfucurá lost this vital battle and its vital flame was extinguished on July 3, 1873 in Chilihué. From that moment on, the fort was a point of passage towards the border that each time went further pushing the Indian.

With the advancement of the line of forts, between the towns of Guaminí and 25 de Mayo, Olavarría and 9 de Julio, a gigantic rhombus 270 kilometers long by 170 wide, of empty lands remained.

Based on this, it was decided to found a town approximately in the center of the rhombus, choosing the location of Fortín San Carlos as the settlement point.

A decree of the Governor of the Province of Bs. As., Dr. Carlos Casares gave life to a new population in the advance of the border towards the Salinas Grandes. It was October 26, 1877. From that moment and through other governmental regulations, the founding caravan was prepared that left the town of May 25, a town in which the offer of land near Fortín San Carlos had had a great impact. .

So much so that after the arrival of the geographer engineer Rafael José Hernández, who had been awarded the layout of the new city, only four days were enough to finalize the preparations for the departure that took place on January 30.

On February 3, they reached Fortín San Carlos and set up camp next to it. Everything was improvised for the future settlers, who had to face the hardships, while Ing. Hernández recognized the surroundings to study the best location of the town.

The same, carrying out his explorations, found landmarks that informed him that the fort and its surroundings were within private property.

For this reason, he decided to move away from there in search of new land, and after consulting with the members of the Commission, they agreed that the most appropriate place (and on public land) was immediately south of the Acollaradas lagoons.

On March 2, 1878, he communicated that decision to the authorities and since then, on this date the founding of the city is commemorated, which for our glory associated two names: San Carlos and Bolívar. The first one already in use in the area due to an old tradition and the other in homage to the Liberator Simón Bolívar, a military man of Venezuelan origin.

San Carlos de Bolívar is the head city of the Bolívar district.

Bolívar's foundation is not due to the logical consequence of having previously recognized a human settlement, as happened in Tandil, Bahía Blanca, Junín, Tapalqué, Azul, 25 de Mayo, among other cities in the province. It was founded by the need to expand the internal border, after having achieved a greater institutional order with governments that wanted a more far-reaching policy and in tune with the advances that were shown from Europe. The fight with the Indian, Calfucurá disappeared, entered a final phase of logical outcome. The desert had been conquered. Populate was the watchword.

Regarding the origin of the name Bolívar, a version that was published in the Buenos Aires newspaper "La Prensa" in its edition of August 18, 1985 by Architect Carlos Zemborain indicates that Bolívar's name is due to a request that Dr. Rafael Herrera Vegas made Gral. Bartolomé Miter, at the time the town was founded. The same would have suggested (but this time for Sucre) for a station near Luján where he owned fields and was pleased.

In addition, he was a relative of Sucre and his wife, the niece of the Venezuelan liberator Simón Bolívar. This version has great consistency to infer that it is exact.

Bolívar's district is one of the most important within the province of Buenos Aires, located in the Northwest sector of the central part of it, within the area known as the Pampean Region, potentially one of the most productive in the world. It covers an area of ​​502,700 Hectares (5,027 Km.2), which represents 1.6% of the surface of the Province.

It is also made up of part of the Region of Las Encadenadas del Oeste and part of the Salado-Vallimanca Region.

It is located between 35º 50 ’and 36º 40’ South Latitude and 60º 30 ’and 61º 40’ West Longitude.

Regarding the City of San Carlos de Bolívar, from the Federal Capital there are 347 total km leaving through the West Access, to Luján then National Route 5 to July 9, and from there by Prov. 65 route. The other option is to 358 km total by Richeri highway to Ezeiza and there taking the National Route 205.





San Carlos de Bolívar is an Argentine city located in the north center of the province of Buenos Aires. It is the head of the homonymous party.

It has 24,094 inhabitants (INDEC, 2001), which represents an increase of 4.2% compared to the 23,113 inhabitants (INDEC, 1991) of the previous census. Currently it is estimated that its population is around 37,000 inhabitants.
