Tourism
Its nickname, Queen of the Beaches, leaves no doubt as to the main attraction of Figueira da Foz. True to its shape, the summer months make its long stretches of golden sand attract swarms of beach lovers who come swimming, surf or simply absorb the seemingly average rays of Figueira.
The name of Figueira da Foz itself, which translates as 'fig tree at the mouth of the river' and inspired many local legends, informs us of the location of the city where the river Mondego flows into the sea. A legend tells us that the fig tree in question was the one that stood at the water's edge and to which fishermen from ancient times attached their boats. The picturesque quality of this scenery is further enhanced by the green hills of the Serra da Boa Viagem, from which abounding stunning views of the scenery abound.
Despite today's tanned crowds, the pinnacle of Figueira's popularity as a resort in the middle of the last century's war period, however, one of its most prominent and important characteristics dates well before that. The Grand Casino, one of the largest in the country, was built in the late 19th century and still houses games, shows and dances.
There are bullfights in the height of summer in the traditional bullring and for those with energy in the summer sun, windsurfing is very popular here as well. Nearby, the old castle on the slope of Montemor-o-Velho makes a visit to this sweet little town that is worth it. In addition, Buarcos is a small unexplored fishing village, north of Figueira da Foz, for those who want something quiet.
