Located in Breidafjordur bay in the northwestern part of Iceland. The island is about two kilometers long and one kilometer wide and is fairly flat almost without hills, so the name "Flatey" means "flat island." Flatey is the largest island among a cluster of about forty other small islands in the area.
If you want to go to Flatey you need to take the ferry in Stykkishólmur or Brjánslækur and do not forget that cars are not allowed on the island. This tiny remote island has just a dusty road that leads from the ferry dock to the so-called ancient village. The old village is composed of several old houses and restored in cheerful colors.
