The protected area rises on the Pacific coast, with beaches, mangroves and coastal lagoons, to tropical forests at the top of Cerro Tacarcuna, which at 1,845 meters altitude is the highest point of the national park, located in the continental division of Serranía. del Darién, a few kilometers from the Caribbean, in the northwest corner of the country. Between the two extremes, an impressive forest cover of tropical rainforests and very humid rainforests of a major watershed defines its landscape.



The main mountain ranges and mountains of the park are of volcanic origin and you can still see the tufts and lavas that manifest its convulsive past. The Darién mountain range to the north, the Pirre and Setule mountain range in the south and the Sapo mountain range and the Juradó mountain range in the south are the most significant morphological features. The most important rivers in the region are born in the park, including the rivers Tuira, Balsas, Sambú and Jaque.



The park is located at the eastern end of the country, in Darien province, bordering 90% of the Panama-Colombia border, and 325 kilometers by road from Panama City.



An important birdwatching spot is the Environmental Center and Cana Scientific Station, located in the heart of the park, in what used to be the famous gold mines of Espirito Santo or Cana.



Numerous historical and nature trails remain open year-round in this area of ​​the national park managed by the National Association for Nature Conservation (ANCON).
