The name of the district of Palcamayo derives from two Quechua voices Pallka which means stretched low, Mayo which means river, among others they refer that the name Palcamayo is derived from the Quechua word Palguilan which also means stretched river.
The Decree Law, Palcamayo was created as an annex to the Acobamba District, on January 12, 1857 and the Commission responsible for the management was:
- Mr. Manuel Arrieta (Mayor)
- Mr. José Pantoja (Justice of the Peace)
- Mr. Manuel Vargas Macassi
- Mr. Baldomero Porras.
During the Government of Don José Pardo the National Congress resolved to raise it.
By Decree Law Palcamayo was created as an annex to the Acobamba District, on January 2, 1857 and the Commission responsible for the management was Mr. Manuel Arrieta (Mayor), Mr. José Pantoja (Justice of the Peace), Mr. Manuel Vargas Macassi, Mr. Baldomero Porras.
During the Government of Don José Pardo the National Congress resolved to elevate it to the category of District on October 3, 1904, with its first Mayor Don Pedro Basto who organized in 04 neighborhoods: Barrio de Marcarac, Barrio de Shaca, Barrio Ochonga, Barrio de Yauman.
The subsequent Municipal Governments were elected by decision of the people, others were appointed directly by the Ministry of the Interior during the time of the Military Government and from 1980 in the Democratic Municipal Elections, a fact that continued until in the elections of the year 1 993 the mayor was assassinated by the hands of Terrorists at the same time that they set fire to the Municipal Palace, destroying a large part of the existing documents, which has prevented obtaining documentary information on the basic aspects of the Community of Palcamayo
At about 3,250 meters above sea level with an area of 168.73 km2. It is situated between the convergent streams of Shaca and Marcarac and emerging into the small valley of Shiquipampa, being surrounded by the San Cristóbal, Run Run, Ticlan and Ochonga hills at whose base is the Palcamayo valley.
It has two rivers that are: Rio Shaca, whose tributaries are the waters of the Huagapo cave and the river and the Rio Marcarac.
Its limits are: To the north with the district of San Pedro de Cajas, to the south with the district of Acobamba, to the east with the district of Huasahuasi and to the west with the district of Unión Leticia.
It has several tourist attractions such as: La Gruta de Huagapo, La Laguna de Cocon, Las Ruinas de Yaumanpata, Choquemarca, Racashmarca, Ticlan, Conchucan and others.
