The Yurimaguas district is located in the hydrographic system of the Huallaga river and is included in part of the sub-basins of the Paranapura (middle and lower basin) and Shanusi rivers. It has an area of 2,684 km2, with an estimated population of 61,968 inhabitants (Source INEI - 2005 census). It is the first district in economic importance in the province of Alta Amazonas. The capital of the Yurimaguas district is the city of Yurimaguas.
Yurimaguas comes from the fusion of the Yuris Indians with the Omaguas. The Yuris inhabited the region of the headwaters of the Acre, Yurúa and Purús rivers and the Omaguas were made up of various groupings of the region
As soon as the Independence of Peru occurred around 1827, there was emigration to Yurimaguas: from Tarapotians, Lameños, Rioja, Moyobambinos and Chachapoyanos. With this population contribution the city of Yurimaguas begins to grow, which since then has been known as ´´Historical Capital of the Peruvian Amazon´´, and for its natural beauty ´´La Perla del Huallaga´´. (Yurimaguas is located on the edge of the Huallaga river.)
According to tradition, Yurimaguas comes from the fusion of the Yuris Indians with the Omaguas. The Yuris inhabited the region of the headwaters of the Acre, Yurúa and Purús rivers and the Omaguas were made up of various groupings from the region between the Tunguruas River and the tributaries of the Apuren (possibly Yapura). Both territories in present-day Brazil. The Capital of Alto Amazonas begins to be characterized as a city with the formation of the native towns Munichis, Motilones de Lamas and later the Yurimaguas from Brazil.
Around the year 1710 the Jesuit Father José Jiménez appeared, who met the tribe formed by the Yuris-Omaguas, with them he undertook his work of catechization, built the first Church and endowed it with bells and an image of Our Lady of Las Nieves, one of the bells has the following legend: ´´PETRUS ESPINOZA ME FIZO - YEAR MDCLXIV and the other: ´´SANTA MARIA LA MAYOR - YEAR MDCCIII - SAN LEONARDO. This version assures that the Jesuit father José Jiménez founded Yurimaguas in 1710.
As soon as the Independence of Peru occurred around 1827, the emigration to Yurimaguas took place: Tarapotinos, Lameños, Rioja, Moyobambinos and Chachapoyanos. With this population contribution the city begins to grow, and it can be considered that with these migrants Yurimaguas is truly founded as a city; that since those times is known as ´´Historical Capital of the Peruvian Amazon´´, and for its natural beauty ´´La Perla del Huallaga´´.

PATRONAL FESTIVAL OF THE VIRGIN OF THE SNOW
PATRON OF THE CITY OF YURIMAGUAS
The Jesuit P. Leonardo Deubler is credited with the dedication of the Yurimaguas Mother Church to Our Lady of the Snow or Santa María La Mayor, as well as the inscriptions engraved on the bells of the “Santa María La Mayor” Cathedral dating from 1764, however, until 1827 when the first baptism book was opened, our parish did not officially appear.
As a consequence of discrepancies between the inhabitants of that time, from 1905 to 1927 festivals were celebrated in homage to two virgins, the festival of the Virgen del Carmen on July 10 and that of the Virgen de las Nieves on August 5, both in good condition. of patrons of the city.
Due to these incidents, it was put to the consideration of the Holy Father in Rome, once the antecedents had been reviewed and considering that the Virgen de las Nieves is the authentic Patroness of Yurimaguas since its foundation, Pope Pio XI Ratti declared her as the sole Patron and since In 1927, this great festival was officially established in all its beauty and splendor.
As of 1974, the responsibility of celebrating the Patronal Festival was transferred to the Provincial Municipality.
CELEBRATION OF THE FESTIVAL OF THE VIRGIN OF THE SNOWS
The Fiesta de la Virgen de las Nieves or “Fiesta de La Patrona” and the ´´Touristic Week of Yurimaguas´´ are celebrated with a great waste of fireworks, music and dances. The events that take place this week are: staging of indigenous and mestizo plays, songs, exhibition and sale of handicrafts, painting, sculpture, photography, books, floral games, Amazonian jokes, sporting and tourist events, workshops, conferences, allegorical walks and others. We also have the presence of indigenous and riverine cultures.
It should be noted that the main attractions of the patronal feast are: The Procession of the Virgen de las Nieves through the main streets of the city, the election of ´´Señorita Yurimaguas´´, ´´Señorita Turismo´´ and ´´Ms Sympathy ´´, the popular walks of the ´´vaca loca´´ and ´´el toro loco´´ through the neighborhoods of the city, which is an attraction and brings together adults and children to the characteristic rhythm that expresses the allegory of the same. We also enjoy the popular festivals in the representative neighborhoods of the city from August 5 to 15 with a frequency of 3 to 4 per night, which culminate in demolishing the traditional ´´Umisha´´ at dawn, and then start the ´´Albazo´´ sign of the beginning of the festival in other neighborhoods.
