Main Square of Colonia del Sacramento

In this square are some of the most famous monuments of the city, and surround charming cobbled streets dating from the seventeenth century.

The Plaza Mayor of Colonia del Sacramento is the main tourist place in the historic center of the city. See the various landmarks around the square, such as the Municipal Museum and the Portuguese Museum. Enjoy the place to relax on a bench and have a picnic among the trees and bushes of the square. The square has been the center of the city since its origin in the seventeenth century, with the arrival of Portuguese settlers.



See the top of the lighthouse of Colonia del Sacramento and the great Uruguayan flag that flies over the trees in the square. You will find the Portuguese Museum and the Municipal Museum near the square. Buy a ticket that gives access to several attractions around the square.



Stroll through the cobbled streets that surround the Plaza Mayor, dating from the time of the Portuguese colonization in 1680. Try international cuisine in one of the restaurants located around the square and adjacent avenues. Drink coffee in a cafeteria while watching locals and tourists go through this famous place.



Visit the square at night when it is illuminated and has a particularly vibrant atmosphere. Have drinks in one of the bars and listen to live music or chat with the locals and other tourists.



In the 17th and 18th centuries, the first settlers used the square to design military strategies and perform important ceremonies. It was also used to punish and execute prisoners during the Uruguayan Civil War.



The Plaza Mayor of Colonia del Sacramento is just over 1 kilometer west of the downtown bus stop and the ferry terminal that takes passengers to and from Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is surrounded by many of the city's most famous icons, such as Calle de los Suspiros (Calle dos Suspeiros) and the lighthouse. Enjoy walking through this lovely part of the city.
